iPhone 4s

The iPhone 4S

Apple is known for its forward thinking, cutting-edge and revolutionary inventions.

Some might have found the launch of an upgraded/evolved iPhone 4 instead of a revamped and brand new iPhone 5, to be less than remarkable.  However, the 4S does present 3 very impressive upgrades, which should inspire die-hard Apple users to seriously consider purchasing the iPhone 4S.

Software

Not surprisingly, the 4S is much faster and powerful.  It features the same dual-core A5 chip that’s found in the iPad 2 and it makes opening apps, loading the web browser, scrolling through screens and countless other operations super smooth.  Apple states that the 4S is twice as powerful as its predecessor and has 7 times the graphical prowess.

Siri

One remarkable difference between the iPhone 4 and the 4S is the addition of  your very own “personal assistant” named Siri.  When it works, it is an amazing feat of technology.

iCloud

All Apple products from now on will have access to iCloud. This means that it no longer matters which device you use, you can access any piece of information you’re looking for, whether it’s an mp3, a photo, app or document.

HTML5

HTML5

Google’s latest ‘HTML5’ Project Site

In the past we have had need for add-ons like Flash & QuickTime to enable us to watch a video online.

With HTML5, a webpage video can play without any add-on products required; a smooth, fast picture stream that is propelling us into the future of internet browsing.

HTML5 technology is up and running on Google Chrome, Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9. It’s also a brilliant plus for iPhone users where Flash isn’t supported, this technology steps in and puts you back in the game.

The following website is an example of the HTML 5 being used – you will need Google Chrome for this site to work properly but we think it is a very nifty look at what the future of web browsing will be.

Single vs Dual Monitors

Efficiency at the work place

Comparison Single vs Dual Monitors with large Screen setup

We at Calgary Computer doctor have pulled together a number of stats from around the world that more or less line up with our experience.

Having done a little research on what the statistics are saying, it appears there are varied opinions on who wins this debate, but the last place slot definitely belongs to the single monitor option, particularly

19″ screens – it’s a minimal starting platform for your business but if you want to get ahead then it’s not an infrastructure you want to stay with for long.

A University of Utah and ATI Technologies did survey of 108 university & non university personnel.

Using Dual Screen monitors compared to use than single monitor set ups reported:

  • -productivity increase with 33% fewer errors
  • -16% faster edits
  • -6% quicker access to tasks
  • -45% easier task tracking
  • -faster performance and 24% more comfortable

Production of work was of a better quality, performed faster and with fewer errors. Task focus of the user along with their speed and ease of learning were also increased.

Apple survey on its larger high definition 30in Cinema screen in comparison to using smaller monitors offered statistics boasting at least a 45% increase in productivity.

One productivity expert who stated that a 5% increase was a more likely figure for larger screen use and around a 30% increase in productivity potential for Dual Monitor use.

Although it’s advantageous to having more space to work, it will help some more than others depending on what they are working on.

Larger screens could also have positive health benefits for workers such as less eye squinting.

On the whole, viewpoints from professionals in the business of promoting and evaluating productivity through hardware and work habits are recommending the dual monitor option as having more verifiable productivity gains than larger screens. The bottom line comes down to how much you can view simultaneously, after that they are looking for increased speed, accuracy, time-saving, ease of use and comfortability. An interesting mix might be the combining of dual monitors and larger screens – a sure fire “win win” situation.

AutoRecover Interval in MS Office

AutoRecover Interval in Microsoft Office 2007/2010

AutoRecover – A very useful feature in Microsoft Office is called “AutoRecover”, which automatically saves your document at specified time intervals so that in case of an application or system crash, Office can recover its latest version.

By default this is set to 10 minutes.

You can change this easily by clicking on the Office button within the application, and then clicking on the “Word Options” or “Excel Options” (or other application) button in the lower right hand side of the window. Go to the “Save” section and look for “Save AutoRecover information every…” and change the settings there. Be sure to click “OK” to save your preference.

Caution: setting the interval at timespans as every 1 minute can slow down your computer. Try a number between 5 minutes to 10 minutes first.

Time to Upgrade Your OS?

Studies and tests are showing consistently better performance from the new Windows 7.

With systems like Windows 7 (which isn’t exactly ‘new’, since it’s been around for a while) gaining ground in the market and proving their worth, it may be time to start thinking about moving up and upgrading your current software.

Here are some thoughts to start the ball rolling: studies and tests have shown that Windows 7 outperform their predecessors in almost every conceivable situation. Considering Microsoft’s recent announcement that they will discontinue support for Windows XP by 2014, the possibility of needing to upgrade becomes more pressing. Like it or not, you will eventually get left behind as technology marches on.
